Retro Junkie
About This Spot
Step into Retro Junkie, and you’re greeted by an inviting blend of nostalgia and vibrant energy that sets the tone for an evening of laid-back fun. Tucked away from Walnut Creek’s bustling main strip, this lively bar feels like a welcoming destination for those seeking something a little different—where music, movement, and memorable drinks come together effortlessly.
The pace here flows naturally, never rushed, with the hum of friendly conversations mixing with the beat of tribute bands playing everything from '90s alt-rock to nostalgic new wave. The crowd is open, easy to connect with, and clearly savoring the shared experience of good company and great live music. There’s a warmth in the air, accentuated by the open-air beer garden that invites guests to linger under the stars while catching an outdoor movie or enjoying themed evenings like Taco Tuesday.
Behind the bar, craft and creativity meet in cocktails that spark curiosity and delight—from cheeky takes on classics to playful concoctions rimmed with candy and garnished with a touch of whimsy. Whether it’s a perfectly chilled martini or a vibrant, fruity mix served with a nod to retro flair, these drinks encourage slowing down to savor each sip. Paired with comfort food offerings that nod to casual indulgence—think two-ingredient fried chicken or street-style tacos—the menu supports the easygoing, convivial spirit that defines the space.
It’s not just about the drinks and bites, though. Retro Junkie nurtures a sense of community through well-curated events, from salsa and bachata dance classes that gently guide newcomers through each step, to themed nights like Super Bowl parties and festive Halloween gatherings where costumes and laughter fill the room. This place stands out as a local hub where lively rhythms and warm smiles invite guests to find their own rhythm, whether through dancing, conversation, or simply soaking in the unique, spirited vibe.

I have been to retro junkie several times for the Super Bowl. It was one of the best experiences and all of Walnut creek with their massive Jumbotron and party and DJ. I’ve also been there for Halloween where they do really cool festive events and everyone dresses up. Richard junkie isn’t on the main strip of bars and restaurants, but it is a place to go to for more of a destination on events that they hold and it is always busy there on weekends.

I’ve visited this place years ago, but was so happy to see the updates since the pandemic. The beer garden is an open air haven! They show movies outdoors with a crisp & clear screen with a booming sound system. The bartender staff were friendly and made great cocktails. The night I went they were serving street tacos, which were delicious. I’ll definitely go back.

Been here about 4 times and honestly the tribute bands have all been quite impressive & fun. We’ve seen tribute bands to The Smiths, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, De Peche Mode, Alice In Chains here. We also have noticed that the audience here are generally unusually friendly. We’ve seen a few regulars while here & folks are open to chat, vibe in the music, really fun which is a welcome change from some unwelcoming “ too cool” crowds in other joints. Parking was easy in the back, drink prices are reasonable, there are places to sit & chill and some cool video & pinball games too. When patio is open there’s been food trucks - this last visit they didn’t have any -but did allow us to DoorDash our own food. We had lots of Palomas & beers while listening to live music - great time!
